True story, I told my 85-year-old fatha last year about opening Northern sole café at 50 years old. Sharp as a tack, he exclaimed the only street food I had growing up was hardened chewing gum (chuddy) off the 1970’s Ossett pavements!
Street food’s come a long way since those tinned boiled burgers in the queue outside Rooftop Gardens or those chips that haven’t touched a pan of hot oil since Frank Wilson was a lad.
The best meals I’ve ever eaten were on the streets, at the sweaty gigs, the crappy campsites and corners of far flung places we occasionally got to visit. The freshness, the lack of snobbery, the value and the vibe all make up the indelible memories I have of great times with my mates over a bowl of fiery noodles in Vietnamese street market or a kebab and a Skol at a sweaty Stoke-on-Trent Northern Soul gig.
So Northern Sole Cafe (yes the ‘typo’ on Sole is deliberate!) is about serving all the best foot stompin’ street food you’ve tasted under one roof, cooked to a soundtrack of Northern Soul, Ska and Old and emerging British Indie and watched over from the walls by heroes like Tony Wilson, Daniel Blake, Billy Casper and JB Barrington. Blend in acoustic sets, street poets and iconic film nights and you’re in the bedroom or 6th form common room you always dreamed of. And right on the canal towpath of one of the best West Yorkshire villages you’ll ever visit.

In a white/ brown/ granary/ ‘tea cake’
A full English in a wrap! crispy bacon, sausage, potato ‘chats’, tomato, herby mushroom, scrambled egg piled into a large tortilla and griddled.

Our own mix of low sugar Granola served with Greek yoghurt (or milk/soya milk), honey or berries
Seriously gooey 3 cheese combro griddled in posh bread with insane fillings
Packed 12 inch tortilla wrapped and toasted. Unwrap it and dig in!

Gooey, bubbly, baked macaroni with sharp cheddar, mozzarella & gruyere straight out of the oven with ‘ooh matron’ toppings:
Lightly spiced fried chicken breast or crumbed mixed veg on a bed of sticky sushi rice smothered in our sweet and spiced Katsu curry sauce topped with Japanese pickles
Mouthwatering chicken thigh or halloumi marinated in a dozen middle eastern spices and grilled to perfection, chopped and stuffed onto a giant flatbread with red onion, crunchy lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomato, minted Greek yoghurt and spicy sriracha
